Village of Sussex water or a Town of Lisbon well: which reaches your tap?
Two communities share the Sussex name: the Village, at 12,710 residents according to Wisconsin's 2026 population estimate, and the Town of Lisbon, at 11,284. The address on your mail does not tell you which water you have. The pipe coming into the house does.
Call (262) 829-5961Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pmWhy the address cannot decide it
Postal names follow mail routes, not water mains, so a Sussex address can sit on either side of the supply question. One house may be on the Village system, with its published 300 milligrams per liter; another nearby may pump its own well.
Those are different waters, not two versions of one number. The Village figure describes the Village's wells, and a private well's hardness shows up only when that well is tested.
The bill test
A water bill from the Village of Sussex utility means the house is on its system. If a water bill has never arrived, expect to find a well. Renters can simply ask the landlord which it is.
What you see where the line comes in
A Village connection usually comes in through a water meter. A private well usually has a pressure tank near where its line enters, and a well cap somewhere outside on the property.
If you just bought the house, the closing paperwork should say which supply it has, and a well may come with lab reports from earlier owners. Keep those.
The Lisbon side brings an extra question
In this part of Waukesha County, iron commonly comes out of the ground with the hardness, from the same rock. On Village water that is the utility's business. On a Lisbon well it is yours, so the iron line on your report belongs on the quote call next to the hardness.
What the quote does with your answer
Village water starts the quote from 300 milligrams per liter, 17.5 grains, and the call turns to your household and where the main line enters.
On a well, your lab report is the starting point. No report? You still get a price on the call, and the softener is set from what the plumber measures at your tap on install day.
Common questions
Is every Town of Lisbon home on a private well?
Assume nothing either way. The bill, and what stands where your line comes in, answer it for your own house, which is the only answer the quote needs.
If my bill comes from the Village, do I need my own test?
No. The Village publishes 300 milligrams per liter for its water, and the plumber reads your tap before any work on install day.
Is the system any different for a Lisbon well?
It is the same package: a whole-home softener, its brine tank and an RO drinking-water tap at the kitchen sink. What changes is the number it is sized and set from.
